I had the absolute privilege to visit the newly renovated Ernie Els Winery, which is situated in the Helderberg region of the Western Cape, this week.
I’ve recently moved to Somerset West (originally from Port Elizabeth) but have visited the region and some of its beautiful wine farms numerous times.
To say that the Ernie Els Winery has been the most beautiful and spectacular wine farm that I’ve been to, is no understatement!
Strolling down the path, which boasts grand granite boulders on either side, I was pretty much speechless when I saw this beauty. The only word I could say was a simple “wow”.
You’re then led through wooden farmhouse-style doors into what feels like Ernie Els’s actual home – or what I can imagine it must look like with its uniquely beautiful interior and modern room furnishings.
The warmness and comfort, paired with the friendly but formal hospitality of the staff, was in complete contrast to the grey clouds and rain.
After being given a complimentary glass of their excellent chenin blanc, you have the opportunity to view the Trophy Room, where The Big Easy’s exceptional achievements are exhibited – needless to say, my golfer boyfriend was in complete awe!
We found a perfect cosy spot to sit and enjoy the wine tasting. Being surrounded with panoramic views of Cape Town and Table Mountain to the west and Stellenbosch and the Helderberg Mountains to the east, was simply magical.
I opted for the Major Tasting, which includes four wines from the Ultra-premium range, while my boyfriend chose the Players Tasting that offers wines from the Big Easy and varietal range.
The lady who attended to us was excellent and explained each wine in detail, with some interesting facts thrown in in-between.
The wines were exceptional, as expected, and brought to life with its story told by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic lady.
In-between wines we wandered around the exclusive merchandise shop and cellar room.
I can confidently say that during our visit we were treated with first-class wines and service.
Thank you to the beautiful winery for making this visit so memorable and treating us like Ernie Els’s own dinner guests, which felt un-fore-gettable, in every way.
